EM•1® Stock Solution is an anaerobically-fermented proprietary blend of selected and beneficial microorganisms.
The combination of microbes in EM®, have a reviving action on an ecosystem and are completely safe to use. In the soil EM® will function by increasing the beneficial microbes which will improve soil health and function. EM® will also improve fertiliser efficiency by improving plant availability leading to increased performance. In a waste management system EM® will control odours and breakdown organic matter in the form of sludge and inorganic deposits to revive the function of a waste system and can contribute positively to an organic composting regime. EM•1® Stock Solution can also be combined with other products such as liquid fertiliser products, and other microbial food sources to enhance the EM® effect.
EM•1® Stock Solution has a wide range of applications in the agricultural and environmental fields. EM•1® can be applied in various ways, including foliar spraying, soil drenching, irrigation, composting, and wastewater treatment. Its versatility allows it to be used successfully in agriculture, horticulture, and environmental remediation. Certified for organic input, EM•1® can be applied as is, or it can be used as the base ingredient to develop a variety of secondary or ready-to-use products to achieve higher cost efficiency. Refer to the range of ready-to-use products offered by Microzone.
EM•1® Stock Solution is available in 1L, 5L, 20L and 1000L containers. Please contact info@mzp.co.za for pricing on large volumes.
EM•1® can be applied directly via soil drench and/or foliar application or used as the base material to produce a variety of EM® “Ready-to-use” products (eg. EM•Agri).
Please note that applications may vary on a case-by-case basis. Typical Application Ranges are provided below:
1-10ml/Liter water as needed.
2-10ml/Liter water as needed, or before critical stages (for eg. flowering)
Use the lowest rate.
1-2 Liter of EM•1® per m3/t of compost.
2ml EM•1® per kg of seed; or dilute EM•1® 1:1000 with water, soak seeds in EM•1® before planting:
Small – 30 min,
Medium (e.g., Maize) – 4 hours,
Large (e.g., beans) – 24 hours;
Sow immediately after soaking. PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval): 0 days.
EM•1® is widely used in agriculture to improve soil health, enhance plant growth, and boost crop yields.
EM® increases beneficial soil microbes, enhancing nutrient availability, and reducing the need for fertilizers.
Accelerates decomposition of organic matter into nutrient-rich compost.
Creates a more efficient use of added nutrients, generating a better growth response from fertiliser inputs. Our research has demonstrated the ability to lower fertiliser use while still getting the same yield.
Enhances photosynthetic efficiency, leading to increased carbohydrate production and energy.
Suppresses pathogenic bacteria and fungi, aiding plants in withstanding external stresses.
Supports all stages of plant growth, from germination to ripening.
Stimulates natural processes and promotes biological activity, fostering a thriving ecosystem.
Boosts crop yield, health, and production, resulting in larger, healthier fruits and vegetables.
Enhances soil structure, quality, and fertility while improving water drainage and aeration.
Supports sustainable farming practices by reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, improving soil fertility, and promoting environmental stewardship.
EM•1® is utilised in water purification systems to improve water quality, reduce pathogens, and restore aquatic ecosystems.
EM® improves water quality in water purification systems.
Reduces pathogens and restores aquatic ecosystems.
It's active fermentation and microbial activity break down organic waste efficiently, reducing sludge and bad smells.
Balances microbial ecology, preventing harmful bacteria dominance and promoting beneficial microorganisms.
Long-term benefits like extended (septic tanks, sewage, pit toilet, and effluent) systems lifespan, lower maintenance costs, and improved overall hygiene and sanitation.
1L of EM•1® Stock Solution can be expanded by the user to 25L EM•Agri using the EM•Agri Fermentation Recipe. EM•Agri provides a more cost-effective option but requires a 7-to-14-day fermentation process and additional materials. When using EM•Agri, follow the same dilution rates as you would for regular EM•1®.

The key is a simple process of controlled fermentation. EM•1® is a microbial concentrate containing microorganisms in their natural state. Activating these microorganisms is straightforward and effective. Over the past 42 years, the EM Research Organization (EMRO) has heavily invested in standardizing this fermentation process globally, ensuring consistent performance with EM® Technology.
During the 7-to-14-day fermentation period, EM•1® reaches its full potential and becomes free from contamination by pathogenic microorganisms. This makes EM•1® one of the safest biological products available, with multiple certifications, including organic.
In summary, controlled fermentation is essential. It neutralizes the microorganisms’ survival mechanisms, creating a strong natural barrier against harmful microbes. Additionally, it enriches the solution with essential amino acids for plant growth, supporting a sustainable and thriving agricultural future.
Microzone offers ready-to-use, fully equipped fermentation tanks that simplify the fermentation process of EM•1® into EM•Agri. If you need instructions on how to equip your own tank, please request them below.
